The International Consumer Electronics Show (CES, to the cool kids) took over Las Vegas last week. Manufacturers churned out hundreds of new products in every category imaginable, including tons and tons of new point-and-shoot digital cameras.
We’ve been working diligently to throw them all into the Digital Camera HQ database. Frankly, most of them are just nominal updates of last year’s models, so it gets tedious trying to whip up something interesting to say about yet another 12 megapixel snapper with 4x zoom.
One prevailing trend is that this year, you’ll get a 14 megapixel shooter, possibly with 720p HD video this year for what got you one of those boring 12mp/4x cameras a year ago. More touchscreen models popped up (hopefully the kinks have been worked out), as did universal SD/SDHC support–that’s right, SD/SDHC can finally fit into new Sony and Olympus digital cameras. Sony still supports Memory Stick too, but it’s about time that this format war ended.
Mostly everything is up on DCHQ at this point, just missing Samsung’s two new DualView models and Olympus’ entire lineup. Update: They’re up.
The best:
- Sony’s HX5V and TX7: These have some excellent bells and whistles, like geo-tagging and a “press and sweep” panorama mode. All new models support SD/SDHC format now too!
- Canon’s A3000 and A3100 Powershots: Not terribly exciting, but hey, they’ll be good for the money.
- Kodak’s Slice: The first slick-looking Kodak in some time. The specs are average for the price tag, but it looks intriguing.

- Casio’s FH100: This has an absurd 40fps burst mode. Whoa.
- Samsung’s CL80: Pretty similar to the Sony Tx7, but with a bigger sensor and zoom. It also looks pretty cool.
- Panasonic’s FH20: Panny’s CES digicam showings elicited a collective “meh” from photo nerds, but this 14 megapixel, 8x zoom, skinny fun-zoomer is the kind of camera they do best.
Not a bad haul overall, but something tells me we’ll see some more exciting stuff from the big players like Canon and Nikon at PMA next month. Complete list of CES 2010 Cameras:
